The Montgolfier Brothers are one of my favorite bands in the world, and it turns out that absolutely no one knows about them. They were originally signed to Poptones Records in 1999 (Started by Alan McGee, the man who MADE Creation Records) and consequently released two full lengths, Seventeen Stars and The World Is Flat (both near-perfect albums), for the label before it collapsed. Then they disappeared completely until last year when they released All My Bad Thoughts, on a tiny UK indie label. It is sad and beautiful music. The vocals and lyrics tell highly detailed stories of loss, worry and wonder, the instruments weave in and out majestically, sometimes progressive other times masterfully repetitive. It is the soundtrack for gloomy days, for drinking wine by yourself on a Wednesday evening... I could go on for days. I've had a hard time deciding which track to post today from about five songs of theirs. I'm going with possibly the saddest song ever written, The World Is Flat. If you like what you hear I demand you track down all three of their LP's. Seriously. This should be your favorite new discovery. In fact, I've decided to definitely post another favorite of mine tomorrow entitled Be Selfish. I hope you look forward to it.
